Change Your Life for the Better

Psychiatrist in Tampa and St. Petersburg

If you find yourself struggling with your mental health, a qualified mental health professional can help you find some answers. As a doctor, a psychiatrist can offer comprehensive testing and treatment to support you on your path to better emotional and behavioral wellness. If you are interested in seeing a psychiatrist in Tampa or St. Petersburg, contact the Neuropsychiatry & TMS Group to discuss possible solutions.

Advantages of Seeing a Psychiatrist

Psychiatry is a field of medicine focused on mental, emotional, and behavioral health. Because they have a medical degree, psychiatrists can assess the mental and physical aspects of psychological disorders, perform a variety of tests to help diagnose a condition, and educate patients about the medications best suited to treating specific mental health disorders.

Psychiatrists can treat depression, attention deficit disorder (ADHD), anxiety, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dementia, and traumatic brain injuries (TBI). You may benefit from seeing a psychiatrist if you are experiencing:

  • Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or anxiety
  • Panic attacks
  • Hallucinations
  • Thoughts of suicide

If you are looking for compassionate treatment for any of the above symptoms, visit one of our psychiatrists in Tampa, St. Petersburg or Brandon. We can discuss your eligibility for numerous treatment options, including TMS Therapy or Spravato®, both of which we offer at our clinics.

How Psychiatrists Differ from Psychologists and Therapists

A psychiatrist is either a medical doctor (MD) or a doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO) who can diagnose and treat mental health conditions with medication and other therapies.

In contrast, psychologists most often possess a doctoral degree in clinical psychology and have completed training in research or clinical practice. They can treat medical conditions with talk therapy but cannot prescribe medication.

Finally, a therapist has a master’s degree in psychology, counseling psychology, family, or another mental health-related field. Although they cannot prescribe medication, therapists evaluate a patient’s mental health and use techniques like talk therapy to reduce symptoms of poor mental health.

Conditions and Treatments

The Neuropsychiatry & TMS Group treats a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, panic disorder, and more. Our clinic offers advanced, alternative psychiatric treatments to address conditions that have not responded well to traditional treatments.

For example, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, is offered as a treatment for depression. TMS is an FDA-cleared treatment that uses electromagnetic pulses to stimulate neurons in specific parts of the brain found to be under-active due to depression. TMS is a breakthrough technology that has helped thousands of individuals treat, and even overcome their depression when traditional treatments like medication and talk therapy have not provided enough relief.

In addition to TMS, The Neuropsychiatry & TMS Group also utilizes Spravato (esketamine) to manage treatment-resistant Major Depressive Disorder. Spravato is administered via nasal spray and has been found to be effective in treating depression as well as anxiety disorders and PTSD. If you are interested in the advanced treatments offered at The Neuropsychiatry & TMS Group, call our office to schedule a consultation.

What To Expect During Your Initial Consultation

During your first visit with a psychiatrist in Tampa or St. Petersburg, or one of our other professional mental health providers, you will discuss the length and duration of your symptoms, as well as your medical history. Your psychiatrist may ask about medications you have previously taken, family history of psychiatric issues, and any changes you have noticed in your overall physical health.

Based on this information, your psychiatrist will work with you to create a treatment plan best suited to your needs. They may provide these services themselves, or you may receive a referral to another qualified professional.

We are here to partner with you during this process and make sure you feel confident about the next steps. During an initial consultation, we will explain recommended medications or procedures and answer your questions.

About Our Clinic

The Neuropsychiatry & TMS Group (TNP), an outpatient psychiatry practice, was founded by Dr. Faizi Ahmed in 2016 in Tampa, FL. He holds a faculty position as Assistant Professor of Behavioral Sciences at the University of South Florida. Since 2016, the practice has expanded to three locations: Tampa, St Petersburg, and Brandon. At TNP, we diagnose and treat psychiatric disorders including depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.
